Slashing 20 Ethereum Validators In Three Hours

Terence Tsao, a seasoned Ethereum (ETH) developer and founding member of the Prysmatic Labs development team, revealed the potential causes of a unique loss of value event in proof-of-stake (PoS) ETH.

Ethereum validators penalized in three hours

Mr. Tsao tweeted that merely three hours ago, on September 23, 2022, a total of 20 validators were eliminated.

Due to problems with attester equivocation, validators were fined. Since validator addresses and index deposit data are not made public, Mr. Tsao acknowledged that the true origins of the problems are yet unknown.

However, it is very possible that duplicate setups and doppelganger identification errors were to blame for these slashing incidents.

As stated in ETH 2.0 documentation, Doppelganger Protection is a critical mechanism as:

Running the same validator twice will inevitably result in slashing

Mr. Tsao also emphasized that with each subsequent update that ETH on PoS would experience, the punishment for cutting and for being offline will increase.

The correct block addition, transaction processing, and integrity of the ETH blockchain consensus are all the responsibility of the ETH validators. The ETH design includes stringent consequences for validators’ bad behavior to stop them from cheating and acting against the network.
