Optimism Hacker Sends 1 Million OP To Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin

On June 9, the bad guys interfered in transferring OP tokens of the Optimism L2 scaling solution to Wintermute and stealing 20 million OP tokens. Hackers took a new step when transferring 1 million OP tokens to the wallet of Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin.

Optimism was robbed of 20 million OPs by hackers

Optimism said it has partnered with Wintermute to ensure that OP tokens have enough liquidity for users to participate in the governance process. For this purpose, the project approved an allocation of 20 million OPs to Wintermute.

However, market maker Wintermute accidentally sent tokens to an untraceable account, after which a hacker broke in, successfully stealing all 20 million OP tokens.

On June 9, Wintermute took all responsibility for the attack. The company also said it would buy back the lost OPs as a price-balancing move.

New steps of hackers

After successfully stealing, the hacker sold 1 million OP tokens to ETH and kept 19 million.

Twitter by Optimism, Wintermute, and Crypto speculated on the hacker’s motives. Wintermute hoped in a post that the hack could be behind a white hat hacker or a humane act has, given that the hacker kept most of the OP tokens. Wintermute also threatened to take legal action against the hacker if he didn’t pay the remaining tokens within a week.

After sending another 1 million tokens to the Ethereum founder’s wallet, the hack now holds 18 million tokens. It is not clear what the hacker’s intentions were after the move. In the past, users have sent tokens to Buterin’s wallet for various reasons.

Last year, Shiba Inu developers deposited $8 billion worth of cryptocurrency into Buterin’s wallet to remove half of the supply from circulation. Buterin burned 90% of the tokens and donated the rest to Covid-related charities.
