A woman is sexually assaulted ‘in Metaverse

Horizon Worlds is Meta’s most significant effort to create a virtual world experience. However, the first concerns about the Metaverse are beginning to emerge.

According to Wionews, Metaverse was launched by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg with many highlights in connecting people online, including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). However, like social media platforms, there are other vulnerabilities, and Metaverse also has its evils.

A new report from SumOfUs, an online non-profit and community advocacy organization, says a 21-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and harassed within 1 hour of participating in the Metaverse.

The anonymous woman who works as a researcher for SumOfUs ‚ says her avatar was “raped” by a male avatar after being taken to his private room at a party on Horizon Worlds. Although everything is happening virtually, the woman can feel the unwanted collision and fumble through the VR controller. When another person touches a user, the hand controller vibrates to create an almost real-life experience in the Metaverse.

“It happened so quickly it made me feel uncomfortable. Part of my brain is like a sexual assault,” the female victim said and believed it was necessary.

How to protect yourself in Metaverse?

Responding to the incident, a Meta representative said: “We recommend that you don’t turn off safety with people you don’t know.”

The SumOfUs report also lists other sexual harassment cases in the Metaverse. SumOfUs said VR users have long reported issues with sexual harassment, verbal abuse, racism, and invasion of personal space across countless apps.
