eBay launches first collection of NFTs in partnership with OneOf

eBay, the global commerce leader that links millions of buyers and sellers worldwide, has announced the launch of a series of exclusive NFTs through a strategic relationship with OneOf, a premier green NFT platform for communities in music, sports, and lifestyle.

The e-commerce giant is looking to get some skin in the NFT game despite declining interest, as represented by total global sales and a contracting crypto market.

Through this collaboration, eBay leverages its worldwide reach and unrivaled inventory, as well as OneOf’s eco-conscious Web3 technology, to continue to provide a seamless experience that allows enthusiasts to confidently purchase and sell high passion and high-value commodities.

The e-commerce platform has partnered with OneOf — an NFT platform touting support for NFTs across multiple “energy-efficient” blockchains. First up in the collaborative series will feature Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky performing career signature moves on the ice.

It was unclear whether eBay or OneOf had obtained permission to use Sports Illustrated photographs. Both parties’ spokespersons did not immediately react to a request for comment.

eBay’s first-ever “Genesis” NFT Collection will feature 3D and animated interpretations of the iconic athletes featured on Sports Illustrated covers over the years, the first of which is available beginning today here.

The company is seeking to strike all the right notes by delivering its lauded green-centric, trendy technology to a consumer base that appears to be yearning for blockchain-based collectibles.

The current collection contains thirteen “limited-edition” digital collectibles based on a tier-based structure, with 299 different NFTs in the green, gold, platinum, and diamond tiers.

Additional drops of OneOf’s sports legends NFT series, repurposing iconic Sports Illustrated covers, will take place throughout the remainder of the year in partnership with eBay, the company said.

“We are excited to partner with eBay, the largest and most trusted e-commerce platform in the world, to introduce NFTs and the power of the blockchain to eBay’s community of enthusiasts through a dynamic, user-friendly experience. You don’t have to be a crypto expert to buy, sell, and collect NFTs. OneOf and eBay are bringing transformative Web3 technology to the next 100 million non-crypto-native mass consumers,” said Lin Dai, OneOf CEO.

eBay, a long-time leader in the collectibles market, strives to provide new technological possibilities and more confidence to collectors. eBay added industry-leading capabilities such as Price Guide, Collection, and Image Scan in 2021.

This year, the e-commerce expanded its Authenticity Guarantee service to trading cards, and it will soon launch the eBay vault: a secure storage facility and digital marketplace for trading cards that will encourage fractionalization and allow users to transfer ownership from seller to buyer in seconds, without the need to re-authenticate or ship the item anywhere.
