Brazil Awards Elon Musk the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit

Elon Musk arrived in Brazil on Friday to discuss initiatives to safeguard the Amazon rainforest with President Jair Bolsonaro, according to ministers, in a boost for the far-right leader, who is under fire at home and abroad for rising deforestation under his watch.

Musk’s visit follows a meeting with Brazilian Communications Minister Fabio Faria in November. Musk is the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla and is in discussions to acquire the social network Twitter. They discussed leveraging SpaceX technology to deliver internet access to remote schools and battle unlawful deforestation.

Fábio Faria, Brazil’s Minister of Communications, welcomed Musk and verified the topics of discussion, but added merely “let’s do this!!” It’s unclear what Musk’s conversations with the Brazilian government about Amazon’s environmental monitoring would entail.

Bolsonaro and Musk also participated in a live video broadcast on the president’s Facebook account, where they stood on stage next to each other, addressing questions from members of the crowd.

The Amazon is a contentious subject in Brazil, with deforestation increasing significantly under Mr. Bolsonaro’s government, which has been accused of supporting impunity for gold miners, farmers, and timber traffickers who unlawfully remove the jungle.

In November, the Brazilian government said that it was in talks with SpaceX to secure satellite Internet in the Amazon jungle and improve the detection of unlawful deforestation.

Bolsonaro, who has chastised big internet companies for their attempts to battle disinformation on social media, welcomed the news that Twitter had accepted Musk’s initial bid for the business. He has also spent years attempting to bring Tesla to Brazil, where the business has no retail presence.
