Near Foundation Establishes Blockchain Hub in Kenya
The NEAR Foundation, a Swiss non-profit that controls the NEAR protocol’s governance and development, has teamed up with Sankore, a local Kenyan blockchain community, to build a regional blockchain hub.
The hub will be dedicated to further blockchain innovation, education, and talent development across Africa.
The hub will be led by Kevin Imani, the founder of Sankore, and will include events, an academy, an incubation program, and the Sankore Bounty ecosystem. Outside of Nairobi, NEAR will operate in less-known Kenyan locations where no other Layer 1 blockchain has yet built a presence.
Imani said: “Our dream is to lead the way in blockchain innovations in providing solutions to Africa’s biggest problems. The NEAR Protocol allows tomorrow’s brightest developers to build custom solutions with scalability, security, and transparency and this hub is the next step in turning our shared vision into reality.”
The project’s education arm has already established relationships with local colleges and enrolled students in workshops, with six students becoming fully qualified developers.
Sankore has already gained popularity in Kenya by funding projects such as Kilimo Shwari, an on-chain solution aimed at protecting Kenyan farmers from agricultural risks like as severe weather and other natural disasters. The insurance is built on smart contracts that gather information about risks.
“We are excited by the potential avenues throughout Africa for blockchain solutions, which come from innovation in development, education and talent,” said Marieke Flament, CEO of the NEAR Foundation.
“This hub represents a unique opportunity to partner with local talent not only for the opportunities that we know exist today but also for the opportunities yet to be created in the future.”
