On February 5, WeChat account “The Art of Plagiarism” revealed comparison photos of NFT avatars, indicating that Wang Wendong, a teacher at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, which is the most prestigious and renowned art academy in China, plagiarized many works of the Boring Ape Yacht Club NFTs collection.
The series of Wang Wendong’s called “Boring Wukong” was disclosed by an account named “Plagiarized Art”. They discovered a slew of ape-themed NFT avatars that have facial shapes and expressions that are very similar to those of BAYC NFTs.
Creator’s Explanation
Regarding the accusation of plagiarism, Wang Wendong also responded quickly and made a detailed response through the “TEAMCAFA” official account in the early morning of the next day.
He explained the reason why he chose Sun Wukong as the creative theme is “among all animals, the most famous and most deeply rooted in China is the monkey, the Monkey King. Wukong has the most popular foundation.” Furthermore, the monkey faces in his works and Boring Ape are so similar because they are all a 45-degree side face angle, a very classic angle.
Finally, Wang Wendong told that since they are all boring themes, the eyes will inevitably be similar.“In most cases, you can’t use wide eyes to express boredom, right?”, he stated.
