Reddit Could Soon Include NFT-Based Profile Pictures

According to reports, Reddit is testing a feature that allows users to set their profile picture to photographs tied to NFTs. According to a corporate spokesman, the function is still being evaluated internally, although it may already be semi-public. Last week, Twitter also included NFT profile images.

According to reports, Reddit’s new feature would allow users to set their profile photo to any non-fungible token with an associated image.

Today, the company spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt explained the functionality to the news site TechCrunch. The social media platform is “testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership.”

He also described the experiment as “a small, internal test,” and stated that Reddit had yet to determine whether to make it more readily available. According to TechCrunch, the capability “has not been made available to public users.”

However, Nima Owji, a non-Reddit app developer, noticed a banner marketing the functionality earlier this week, implying that the feature is already semi-public.

Twitter also introduced support for NFT profile images last week. Twitter, like Reddit, is testing the functionality by restricting its access to Twitter Blue subscribers.

The social media platform has already engaged in various crypto-related endeavors. The firm launched cryptocurrency tokens for its /r/cryptocurrency and /r/Fortnite communities in May 2020. These coins, known as MOONs and BRICKs, are based on Ethereum specifications.

Reddit launched its own brand of NFTs named “CryptoSnoos” in June 2021, based on the company’s extraterrestrial mascot.

Last October, the firm posted a job listing indicating that it would be hiring personnel to construct a broader NFT platform. Various reports in November stated that the corporation would transform its “karma” system to one supported by NFTs.

Because Reddit has around 430 million monthly users, these features have the potential to bring NFTs to a very large audience.
