Well-known whistleblower Edward Snowden and Polkadot founder Gavin Wood discussed how Web3 can help keep society away from fundamental trust issues.

Edward Snowden speaks with Gavin Wood about Web3's data ownership and privacy

Edward Snowden and Gavin Wood

During a discussion of the history of the development of the decentralized Internet at the BlockDown: DeData Conference, Gavin Wood, co-founder of the Web3 platform, said that Edward Snowden’s revelations helped reduce the urgency of creating an entirely new platform that traditional authority-based technologies are in will overshadow.

Wood acknowledged that the 2013 revelations created “society’s need to move away from fundamental questions of trust” and looked at this radically different approach to face-to-face interaction at the highest global level – “The Post-Snowden Web”.

Service providers do not need to be trusted

Looking ahead 10 or 20 years from now, Wood hopes that the future “multi-user application framework” – the global services we commonly refer to as the “web” – will actually give us guarantees ”.

“Strong certainty that the rules are open and transparent – readable, whether code, whether in English – and a credible belief that they will be followed, which is what is missing in the world of pre-blockchain, pre-P2P”, focus on the authority to provide trusted services.

“It’s going to be a very interesting social experiment,” Wood replied when asked what Web3 will look like in a decade.

“We’ll see how much the world cares about privacy, autonomy, and transparency, knowing that the rules – assumptions about how a system or service should work – are correct.”

Watch out for predatory activities

“We already have this beautiful thing – on the Internet – that was given to us. But there is an antagonistic force that the internet has used to exploit it – they have accepted it as a gift to themselves, to the exclusion of everyone else, ”Snowden said of the powerful forces, government and corporation.

Snowden sees the same pattern that is “beginning to warp” blockchain space.

“We see a lot of projects being tampered with, distorted, or redesigned to be as fair as possible to investors in the project,” added Snowden, calling this “a misleading incentive.” Corruption of the ideals of space.

“Over time, the common good will take precedence over individual self-interest,” concluded Snowden.

In addition to the pitfalls of issuing CBDCs, Snowden also warned of the potential future impact of projects to create personally identifiable databases.

“Watch out for predatory activities,” he says. He is primarily interested in “first mover advantages – network effects – from market leaders and those with many resources.”

Snowden expressed his reservations about NFT in the GameFi sector and criticized the tendency to “convey a false sense of scarcity”.

“I see them starting to play games in ways that a lot of people are excited about,” Snowden said, calling it “an inherently anti-social urge.”
