A group of hackers is demanding $ 70 million worth of Bitcoin to put an end to a massive ransomware attack.

The attackers are the Russian REvil group. Details of the hack were shared on the group’s dark web portal today. The group is demanding $ 70 million in Bitcoin as a ransom for a “multi-function decryptor” that enables infected system owners to recover from the attack.

On July 2nd, Kaseya experts advised their customers to disable the software because of possible attacks, this was later confirmed. The company said the hacker’s actions affected a small group of its customers, but the scope of the attack increased as the investigation continued.

According to Bloomberg, hackers attacked eight IT support companies and gained access to the networks of thousands of their customers.

“This is one of the most powerful non-governmental attacks of all time,” said Andrew Howard, chief executive officer of Kudelski Security, a Switzerland-based provider of managed cybersecurity services.

“There is hardly a better way for hackers to spread malware than through trusted IT providers.”

Cyber security experts immediately assumed that the REvil hacking group was behind the attack. Huntress Labs later found a $ 70 million ransom note in Bitcoin on the darknet hacking site to decrypt all of the victim’s files.

REvil (also known as Sodinokibi) is associated with the Russian Federation as it does not attack Russian organizations or companies in countries of the former Soviet Union and it often posts messages in Russian.

US President Joe Biden said he was not sure whether the Russian authorities were involved in the attack on Kaseya. He added that US intelligence agencies are investigating the incident.

Citing that REvil encrypted Acer’s files in March and demanded payment of $ 50 million in Monero cryptocurrency, this group attacked Apple in April.

In June, the world’s largest meat processor, JBS REvil, fell victim and paid hackers a ransom of $ 11 million in Bitcoin.
