Alexey Pertsev, the creator of the Ethereum mixer Tornado Cash, will be imprisoned in Amsterdam at least until February, 2023 – according to a Dutch court.
Pertsev has been imprisoned in the Netherlands since August for his role in Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixer seized by the US on August 8 on suspicion of assisting criminals in the handling of more than $1 billion. USD dirty money, particularly the notorious North Korean hacker group.
Despite the outpouring of protests and criticism, Alexey Pertsev will remain imprisoned for another 3 months, according to the developer’s wife, Ksenia Malik.
Outside the courtroom, Pertsev’s lawyer, Keith Cheng, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision.
“Obviously, the judges here aren’t as good as they usually are at handling this.” The Bitcoin Mixer is currently the only case law to rely on… However, the court must view Tornado Cash in a completely different light.”

And, as is customary, the court’s decision today enraged the protesters even more. Edward Snowden, an American living in Russia, also expressed outrage following the leak of National Security Agency documents, comparing Pertsev’s treatment to that of the executives of the disaster exchange FTX.
