Dangerous Hacker Group TeamTNT Is Targeting Bitcoin
The TeamTNT hacker group has been alerted to being active again. Their goal this time is to run decoders for Bitcoin. However, their plan is very difficult to implement when Bitcoin is still the safest cryptocurrency.
Since early September, AquaSec’s threat analysts have observed TeamTNT activity on their honeypots, leading them to suspect the infamous hacking gang is back in operation. TeamTNT made its retirement announcement in November 2021.
The researchers observed three attack types being used in the allegedly new TeamTNT attacks, with the most interesting one being to use the computational power of hijacked servers to run Bitcoin encryption solvers.
New attack method named “the Kangaroo attack”, due to using Pollard’s Kangaroo WIF solver, the attack scans for vulnerable Docker Daemons, deploys an AlpineOS image, drops a script (“k.sh”), and eventually fetches the solver from GitHub.
Bitcoin uses the secp256k1 elliptic curve for its keys and signatures. When the cryptocurrency became popular, the choice of this specific realization puzzled cryptography experts because secp256k1 was almost completely unknown compared to other solutions. TeamTNT hackers are now attempting to break elliptic curve encryption with stolen resources.
