Using Bitcoin To Hire Assassins To Kill Her Husband, Woman Sentenced To 10 Years In Jail

The woman hired a Bitcoin hitman on the Darkweb to kill her husband and the US Department of Justice announced the sentencing of Jessica Leeann Sledge of Pelahatchie, Mississippi, to 10 years in prison on August 1st.

According to the DOJ, Jessica Sledge searched the dark web for an assassin to kill her husband. On that charge, she was sentenced to a maximum of 120 months in statutory prison for “using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of a murder-for-hire” according to U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca and Agent Jermicha Fomby of the FBI’s Jackson Field Office.

The DOJ’s filing says that Sledge attempted to contact an assassin online between September 2021 and November 2021 and sent three payments using Whatsapp totaling $10,000 in Bitcoin on October 4, 9, and 10 of last year.

Unbeknownst to Sledge, the “hitman” she was in contact with was a federal agent. Sledge was caught and confessed to her involvement in the murder-for-hire scheme after they met in Brandon, Mississippi, on November 1, 2021.

Sledge received a ten-year jail sentence, a $1,000 fine, and three years of supervised release in addition to her time behind bars.

When Sledge received his payments in October 2021, the price of one bitcoin was around $54,771. If law enforcement had stuck onto the BTC during the Spring cryptocurrency fall, it would now be worth about $5,800.

Bitcoin’s use in crime continues to be a cudgel regulators use to justify a ban on cryptocurrencies. Last year, Nelson Replogle of Tennessee allegedly paid a hitman he found on a murder-for-hire website to kill his wife using Bitcoin from his Coinbase wallet.
