The Founder Of Bored Ape Yacht Club Has Denied Accusations Of Racism and Fascism

Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) has denied allegations that this NFT project is built on fascist and racist ideas.

Bored Ape Yacht Club and allegations

Earlier this week, the NFT community shared a YouTube video over an hour-long post on June 20, claiming to “unveil” the truth about the ideals behind the most popular NFT project today, now Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). Throughout the video want to emphasize that the NFT project is fascist and racist.

Some notable points shown in the video include:

  • The project uses the image of an Ape, a primate similar to a monkey (monkey), a slang term used to discriminate against black people in Western countries.
  • The logo of Bored Ape Yacht Club has a design very similar to the skull logo of the SS, the fanatical paramilitary organization serving the Nazis. Not stopping there, the number of teeth on both skulls is 18, the number that, when changed into alphabetical order, will be AH, which stands for Adolf Hitler’s name.
  • The Bored Ape Yacht Club collection and the follow-up project Otherside were released on April 30, the day of Hitler’s death.
  • The design of many Bored Ape uses images reminiscent of colonialism and fascism.
  • The company behind BAYC is Yuga Labs, with the word Yuga being claimed as the “mouth-watering word” of far-right elements on the underground social network 4chan. Many Yuga Labs/BAYC puzzle games later also contained far-right language on 4chan.
  • Twitter names of 4 anonymous founders of BAYC, Gargamel, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, Gordon Goner, and Sass, all have racist, depraved or fascist meanings.

Philion then urged NFT users to join the BurnBAYC movement and boycott the project.

Feedback from Yuga Labs

In response, on the morning of June 25, the founders of Bored Ape Yacht Club, represented by Gordon Goner, published a blog post refuting the allegations. In the article, Gordon Goner stated that the four founders of BAYC had no reason to support fascism with Jewish, Turkish, Pakistani, and Cuban backgrounds. Goner also alleges it’s just a conspiracy to smear the project to sell NFT.

The BAYC founders also stated that they chose the word Ape as the focal point of the NFT collection due to the “ape-in” joke popular in the crypto investment community.

The logo’s inspiration comes from sailing clubs. Maritime elements (which make up the Yacht Club) – the skull design of the logo has been recognized by the Anti-Damage Alliance (ADL) as unrelated to fascists and segregation of Jews; the name Yuga is the name of a boss in the popular Zelda series; The founders’ names come from many memories in their own lives.

Yuga Labs stated that to prevent infringement of intellectual property rights and smear the project, they have filed a lawsuit against the parties involved, but the specific content is unknown.

Controversy continues to this day in the NFT community.
